Today we emphasized the fact that the input of the tubes must be a periodic pulse-train in order to create a voiced phoneme. The concept of guitars, trumpets, and muffler came up in the discussion. W then continued talking about the tube model of the vocal tract. We obtained equations describing, in the z-domain, the relationship between the air flow at the beginning of a tube and at the end of a tube (time delays). We also obtained equations describing, in the z-domain, the relationship between the air flow before a tube junction and after a tube junction. We wrote both sets of equations as matrix equations. We concluded the lecture by combining these matrix equations into a single one to describe the effect of going through several tubes. Hopefully everyone understands the pattern now.
