Assignment 2, ECE400, Fall 2014
"Professional Statement"
due in class, October 16, 2014. Note the two steps of the submission process:
- Hand in an electronic copy on Blackboard Learn (via safeAssign).
- Hand in a hard copy to your instructor in class.
Please note that, if you are applying to graduate school, you may write a Graduate School Statement of Purpose instead of a Professional Statement. See this document for more details.
Description
For this assignment, your task is to write a one-page paper describing your readiness to work as an engineer.
Content
This document should include specific and relevant evidence of your preparation via references to skills and experiences you have had. These could include, but are not limited to, course projects; internships, Co-Ops, or jobs; research; publications; extracurricular activities; and computer skills. You may want to take into consideration the ABET program outcomes (www.abet.org) and/or the attributes of the Engineer of 2020 (www.engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/Academics/Engineer2020/) for determining the appropriate knowledge and skills for a professional engineer. Be certain to discuss how these abilities will be used in your future employment. If you use information from either of these websites (or others), you must cite your sources according to IEEE format (www.ieee.org).
Purpose
To make a case for your credibility as an entry-level engineer
Audience
A potential employer who has a bachelor’s degree in engineering (not from Purdue)
- What does s/he need to know about you? What concerns might s/he have about you that your statement can address?
- Remember that the employer is not familiar with ECE course numbers, curriculum, or faculty; establish the context for the evidence to which you refer
Format
Your paper should be one single-spaced page and adhere to the following format. Write in complete sentences and paragraphs using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. You should write in the first person.
Grading Criteria:
Your assignment will be graded out of 100 points; see the Writing Rubric for the grading key. If you need help, you may contact Joanne Lax or the Writing Lab (494-3723; 226 Heavilon Hall)
